Children go through many transitions in their first five years. These are times of change as they are learning to handle new routines, situations and expectations.

Educators play a crucial role in sensitively guiding children through these adjustments. It is about teaching children to regulate their emotions and behaviours when faced with change or unfamiliarity. However, educators cannot do this alone — teaming up with parents is key.

STRATEGIES TO MINIMISE DISRUPTIONS AND EASE TRANSITIONS

  1. Build trust with the children in your care. Infants, toddlers and preschoolers learn best with adults with whom they feel safe and secure. This is important in times of change and transition.
  2. Familiarise yourself with the child’s home routines. Check in with parents to understand their home routines, so that these can be continued at your centre. Predictable routines make transitions easier for both children and their families.
  3. Maintain communication with parents. Work closely with families to better understand them and their expectations. When children observe warm and positive parent-teacher interactions, they feel more secure and valued.
