Secure relationships with adults provide a strong foundation for young children’s social, emotional and cognitive development. Aside from parents, young children spend most of their time with preschool teachers. Therefore, it is crucial for parents to work together with their children’s teachers to support their learning, development and well-being.
How can parents nurture positive partnerships with their children’s teachers? Professor Kenneth Poon from NTU-NIE recommends four strategies.
Having a close relationship with your child’s educators supports their holistic development.
- Get to know the teachers. Introduce yourself to your child’s educators. Express your appreciation to them for their care and teaching. Let them know how they can stay in contact with you.
- Help them understand your child. Share your child’s strengths, interests and preferences. Highlight specific aspects that may be beneficial for the teachers to know, such as your child’s favourite toy or a special wake-up routine.
- Model positive interactions with teachers and peers. When a child observes their parents engaging warmly and positively with their teachers and peers, it fosters the child’s trust and promotes healthy relationships with others. It also enhances the child’s self-esteem and confidence.
- Share challenges and helpful tips. Keep teachers informed when you encounter any challenges. Have an open mind and learn from one another on how to better support your child’s educational and developmental journey.
